Transmedia Narrative

One Story-Multiple Channels

Transmedia storytelling has elements of a fiction spread across multiple channels creating a unified and coordinated experience for the audience.

An example of this is from the lecture The Matrix World which was dispersed over the different mediums like; film trilogy, animated series, graphic novels and games.

These varied channels provide bits of story line that you often can’t get fully from just the movies, in the animated series it shows how it all began then the movies went on with the plot.

These multiple narratives creating this coherent whole is what transmedia storytelling is all about and that’s how it is a seperate concept from Multimedia which is multiple medias but one story.

Audiences then travel between media platforms engaging with content and interacting with eachother. “The unfolding story design creates the motivation to engage with other participants, seek out other parts of the story, and contribute to the narrative by adding content.”- Dr. Pamela Rutledge

Same story over and over but different media in this case it’s a different cast and ethnic group telling the story through a remake of the original.

Another example of Transmedia Storytelling is the Disney franchise, their products often are a reference to olden day fairytales turned slightly more modern like with Princess and the Frog. The main character Tiana was inspired by the Brothers Grimm story Princes and the Frog as well as real Creole chef Leah Chase a legendary woman that brought herself up from nothing. The real started from the bottom now we here.

Multiple stories and situations played throughout many media platforms.

This movie then turned into dolls, games online, etc although this movie didn’t become as huge as the Little Mermaid which has it’s own tv series it is an example of Transmedia Narrative.

  1. It would have been really nice to see some links to other peoples discussions on your specific transmedia examples within your post; even if it was just a link to the overviews of The Little Mermaid comic/tv series/movie etc.

I’m not sure I would classify this as a transmedia narrative, rather than a re-adaption of the original plot. Where I do think that Disney employs transmedia well though, is through their adaptions within the toys, and how they market it: all their princess merchandise are portrayed as friends, they know each other because they are all princesses – why wouldn’t they? The toys then offer different aspects for children to adapt the plot to suit their own play, allowing them to create the transmedia narrative in real time: pets of the princesses, princesses as children; even the Little Mermaid kitchen you pictured above; it all creates an entry point into the story which leads to a different interpretation that exists outside of the canon universe, while still adding to the experience of the canon universe. There’s a really cool artist who creates the comics called “Pocket Princeses”, which follows her fan narrative of all the princesses living in the one house (https://www.facebook.com/pocketprincesses/). Her adaption has become so popular that Disney has commissioned her to do a few pieces for their own commercial use, which then gets included into the official canon universe.
